black-robbed dancers holding red gada
stick racing onto the stage. Audiences fell
into a silent astonishment. Then, groups of
people wearing protective gears and holding
syringes—supposedly-healthcare workers
came and started to fight them. At the end of
the dance, all of the dancers showed us the
letters written on tampah (wooden plates),
saying “Jakarta Bangkit” (Rising Jakarta).

The artistic performance was held as an
opening act for Jakarta’s 494 anniversary

celebration at Jakarta City Hall, in the end
of May. The dance was called “Tari Jakarta
OPEN Bangkit”, named after this year’s anniversary
theme.

For the Governor of Jakarta Anies Baswedan,
the dance resembled what has been
happening in our city in last January, 2020,
when corona virus hit the city and forced
