32 ART & CULTURE
LIFE LESSONS
FROM SILAT
TROKTOK
Troktok holds not only the lesson of moves and
techniques, but also the arts to train bravery,
modesty and tawadhu (humility).
etawi is known for its richness in culture,
one of which is its martial arts, Silat
B Troktok. This art has been determined as
an intangible cultural heritage by the Ministry
of Education and Culture in 2019.
A practitioner of Silat Troktok, Charuddin,
is optimistic that the martial art will be
preserved since there are many of the
Betawineses who are still consistent in
learning the art, in order to encourage the
preservation.
Silat Troktok was being developed in
the 1920s by H. Marzuki at Rawa Kidang
area, Cengkareng, West Jakarta, where
Troktok martial arts were being studied
and inherited for generations. “I learned
Troktok from the late Bang Lukman Syukti
at Ulujami,” said Chairuddin to JaKita at his
house in Srengseng Sawah, South Jakarta.
Heru, as he’s always called, said that his
teacher KH Marzuki bin Holil is a public
figure at Kampung Rawa Kidang, who
was also known for his great self-defense
techniques.
Like any other silats, Troktok holds not only
the lesson of moves and techniques, but
also some magnificence. According to Heru,
Troktok has its own uniqueness: four moves
and eight steps for its form of self-defense
technique. “Troktok’s unique techniques are
seen in its catch and lock moves. All of them hold
special philosophy,” said Heru.
