                                                          Long History

                                                          During the Dutch colonial period, Batavia was
                                                          formed with  many large residential  areas, in
                                                          order to distinguish areas of the Dutch noblemen
                                                          with the natives. One of the residential areas is
                                                          Kampung Jawa in Mangga Dua, West Jakarta.

                                                          Jawa is one of the old villages in Jakarta. In the
                                                          past, it housed soldiers of Sultan Agung who
                                                          chose to stay after the attack on Batavia in 1628-
                                                          1629. The citizens were highly suspected and
                                                          labeled bad by the VOC at that time. Hence, the
                                                          image of Jakarta villages as slum and far from
                                                          proper residential area becomes a challenge
                                                          that needs to be handled by the government.

                                                          Still, all of those kampungs are part of Jakarta.
                                                          They support the capital city of Jakarta and
                                                          often becomes the house for workers, both
                                                          workers in formal  and  informal sectors,  which
                                                          is one of the factors driving Jakarta’s economy.

                                                          Referring to a study by Jakarta Statistics Agency
                                                          (BPS) in 2017, 445 (86%) community units (RW)
                                                          in Jakarta were categorized as slums and 15
                                                          (3.37%) RWs were categorized as poor slums,
                                                          that includes the Kampung Aquarium, Kampung
                                                          Tanah Merah, Kampung Kunir, Kampung Tongkol
                                                          and so on.

                                                          Under  the  governance  Anies  Baswedan,  these
                                                          villages were rejuvenated. Last year, during
                                                          the announcement of the construction of
                                                          Kampung Aquarium, Anies said the government
