Organizing Kampungs
in Jakarta
To organize kampungs in Jakarta doesn’t
only mean to provide housings, but
also establishing a productive village
community.
ampung (Indonesian for village) holds
various of meanings. It can refer to a group
K of houses, the smallest unit in a city that
occupies a certain area. It can also refer to an
underdevelopment, something that is not modern
and old-fashioned.
The existence of a kampung cannot be separated
from the culture of Indonesia. A British scientist and
social psychologist, John Charles Tuner in his book
Housing by People, said that kampung is a unique
form of settlement and traditional environment of
Indonesia. They are usually characterized by the
characteristics of life that are intertwined in close
relationships, mutual cooperation, and so on.
Unfortunately, today, a kampung is often identified
as a slum residential area with poor public facilities.
