Recently, they invented motif of parang
kembang which derived from plants, such as
telang flower, hibiscus flower, coral vines and
betel vines. There are also special Betawi motifs
that shows the current life in Jakarta, such as
the life of Jakarta youths and other modern
motifs.
Technically, said Hari, Palbatu Batik Village
already has all it needs to produce batik just
like any batik centers outside Jakarta. However,
they face some challenges for marketing the
products due to the COVID-19 situation.
Before pandemic hit Jakarta, Palbatu Batik
Village relies on the revenue from the selling
and the teaching of making batik, as well as
from students who visited the place. “Before the
pandemic, many people visited this place. They
came not only to learn how to make batik but
also to buy batik clothes,” said Hari. He admitted
that COVID-19 pandemic has impacted on their
revenue. Now they would only rely on the selling
of batik only, although it isn’t much.
When JaKita team browsed the workshop, their
batik—both clothes and fabrics are neatly
arranged. Hari told us that of all batik motifs
available in the village, the Jakarta motif is
the most favourite one. The buyers are usually
tourists who want to seek for special souvenirs
from Jakarta.
He hoped the enthusiasm for buying Jakarta
batik would spread to many people of Jakarta.
Therefore, the production of batik will continue
and the special motifs of Jakarta will always be
existed in the future.
