To confirm his findings, Jenner extended his experiments
to several other children, including his own infant son.
Once again, he succeeded: cowpox was able to protect
humans from smallpox.
Smallpox has indeed been a frightening disease for
humans. The disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus
is highly contagious and so virulent. In the 18th century,
hundreds of thousands of Europeans were reported to
th
have died each year from smallpox. Until the 20 century,
this infectious disease was reported to have killed at least
300 million people.
Two years after his experiment, Jenner published his
findings in 1798 and vaccinations became accepted until
today. The discovery of vaccines was a very important and
meaningful discovery in the world of medicine. During the
th
last half of the 20 century, all the diseases that were once
common worldwide, became rare since the invention of
vaccines. Smallpox, measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria
and pertussis have dwindled from fearsome epidemics to
rare outbreaks in recent decades.
